The penalty for involvement in the slave trade is death, and if the King fails to provide justice and order under ma'at, the High Priests can order him to commit suicide. When a Roman slave ship wrecks off the coast of Nabara, peace is shattered. Ancient caravan routes, pastoralists, and nomadic hunters are threatened by kidnappings, robbery, and murder, forcing Nabaran High King Amkar Kashta to invoke the power of the six-kingdom alliance that is Nudolla. Each member of the ruling families finds themselves thrust into the rising slave trade, and the corruption of everything and everyone it touches. It is an adventure told from the secret sanctuaries of the desert fathers in the Scetes Desert, and the massive pyramids of Meroë, to the Skeleton Coast, and over the Great Barrier Mountains of Apedemak. Here, kings and queens, princes and princesses, slave traders and gladiators, high priests and slaves, scribes and warriors, caravan robbers, and hermits collide under the thread that links them all- Captivity and Kings. I received a copy of this book from the author for free and I am leaving a review voluntarily.Wow, this was quite the read. This novel was so rich; from the carefully crafted characters to the cities and the villages where they all dwelled, plus the historical accuracies. This author is definitely someone to look out for. The only complaint I would have is the mixed POV's as they were confusing at first, even with the handy appendix. Some of the voices kind of blended together and I had to go back to see who it was that was speaking. Regardless of my complaint, it is still an excellent read and I absolutely recommend it. It gives a wonderful view of a side of history that the West doesn't always get to see. RatingE. Y. Scientists create two groups to save mankind, our culture, and our technology. One group goes into stasis while the other heads to Mars. Centuries later, those in stasis wake up to find the Martians have invaded! Horribly scarred as a child from a Martian attack, Tedo is eventually thrown out of his clan to survive on his own. He stumbles across Alec, an artificial intelligence created by Cynthia Carter over two thousand years earlier, and he has a problem. Unable to wake the members of Group A, he asks Tedo for help. The world Cyn wakes up to find is completely different from the one destroyed by Apophis. But that's okay—it's why she was made and she has prepared for it. What she didn't expect was Tedo, the Martians, or to wake up to a world headed for war. I received a copy of this book from the author for free and I am leaving a review voluntarily. This was awesome. Nothing like impending doom, an end of the world survival story. I really enjoyed that the author considered the survival of the human race and set up a possibility of survival after a catastrophic event. The practice of eugenics was incredibly thought out. Two groups of genetically modified children are raised as the hope and future of the human race. One group is placed in stasis while the other group was sent to Mars in hopes that they could return one day to Earth. The brains of the story were Cynthia or Cyn. She was incredibly smart, although she was essentially written to be. But even as a precocious child, she was super intelligent and self-aware. But Tedo was easily the best character. He was relatable for a character which endeared me to him especially. While this isn't a hugely science-heavy book, it is still an excellent read for science fiction. But something evil is alive and awake in those woods, creatures that care nothing for human motivations. They’re driven by their own insatiable need: a ravenous, bottomless hunger. The campgrounds are full tonight, and the creatures are starving. Before the night is over, they will feed. ReviewI received this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review.Oh man! This was the best campy (pun intended ;) ) horror novel that I have read in a long, long time. Thanks to this novel, I'll remain agoraphobic and plan not to camp any time soon, at least not where the book was set either. Yikes. Also, I'm not keen on sleeping on the lumpy ground, haha. But I definitely do not want the oily, poop shaped leech monsters that eat people to ruin it either. Oh lord, though, these characters were some of the most abhorrent of people. I was kind of glad that these terrible people aren't real people but OOF, to die to the... hands? No, no hands: just big leechy mouths. Anyhow, to die like that poor people and also yuck. Absolutely the best read. If you're a camping aficionado, don't read this book before you go, you may end up lying awake all night worrying about man-eating poop slugs. It didn't seem that the father in the story was going to ever figure out how to survive in this new, animal run kingdom. He was pretty hopeless at some parts. Review I received this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review. Oh how I love historical fiction! Ida I wasn't so sure about Ida at first. I knew she was meant to be a slave but she was pretty dang bossy for a slave. She was rough and harsh. She seemed very unwilling to be a slave girl born with nobility in her blood. Eventually though, life tamed her a bit. She became head slave and a beloved friend of the Queen Ankhesenamun and childhood friend of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, and eventually his forbidden and secret love. Quite an admirable feat for this woman to bear and live with. The moment that Ida chose to be Tut's wife of his heart, her life was set for an entirely new path. All the supporting characters played their parts well for Ida's story to flourish. I enjoyed the happiness that Pharaoh Tutankhamun before his unfortunate death at such a young age, the secret that Ida carried to as much safety as she could muster, and the eventual just desserts for the scheming Queen Ankhe. This is a short, sweet historical fiction with a lovely touch of romance with one of Ancient Egypt's most famous Pharaoh's. In an alternate reality version of 2034, terrorist attacks on American soil continue after the events of 9/11. The Office of Civilian Safety and Defense, created in 2019 to oversee domestic security, rises to unprecedented heights of power by exploiting the people’s overriding fear of terrorism. When Tommy Bailey and Careen Catecher meet during one of the bogus terrorist attacks, they discover the OCSD’s darkest secret: an antidote distributed by the government to “protect” people from the effects of imaginary toxins in the air is really being used to lull them into a state of submission. Tommy and Careen face a difficult choice: stay quiet about what they know—or risk their safety and anonymity to join an underground rebel group that’s determined to break the OCSD’s grip on the nation. Counteract explores the nature of power and the consequences and difficulties created when government attempts to control minute details of citizens’ daily existence. "Tracy Lawson's novel asks an even more disturbing question--what if the real culprit was someone or something we trusted? I thought The Hunger Games might be the Millennial generation's version of George Orwell's 1984. Now, I think Counteract and the Resistance Series are more primed to take that spot."--SR Staley, author of St. Nic, Inc., and the Tortuga Bay series. Where to Buy My Rating 4.75 Stars Review I received this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review. 9/11 was possibly one of the scariest times in the Western world. I don't think we ever would have thought things would end up the way it had. But could you imagine a world where the fear of terrorists completely changed how the United States of America functions, right down to continuously creating fear of terrorists? Oh, wait, parts of that is already happening. This is eerily familiar, almost creepy how familiar this is to what is currently happening all over the world. The Office of Civilian Safety and Defense was created to keep civilians safe from the on-going threat of terrorism. But it functions in a way that what you eat, drink, listen to, watch and so on is determined by the OCSD. Keeping the people ignorant and the people's fear high. Careen As a lead character, she is admirable. Careen is smart, enough to know that the antidote wasn't really right as it makes her feel silly and loses hours. She's independent enough to try to fight it. Questioning the motives of the OCSD is brave, especially as people who speak out are often detained. Tommy He was tough to read about, having to grieve the loss of his family and be contained to his house with a broken leg. The antidote became more of an escape for him from his reality, even though Careen's presence makes him question what really happened to his parents, what the antidote does and what the OCSD is up to. So with the chaos of the end of the book, it will be interesting to see if Careen and Tommy have what it takes to bring down the OCSD. If you enjoy dystopian, young adult, new adult genres, this might be a very good read for you. Review
I received this eBook from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was a wonderful blend of fantasy, myth and future. I love anything Fae, even though Alyssa is actually an elf. Close enough.
The elves have made themselves known to the human world and live side by side with them. Some favour the human world and have embraced the tech. I loved that Alyssa lived double lives. First life was owning a store front selling relics of the past and her second job is as a cat burglar. With her elf abilities, she was on a fast track to becoming one of the best. At least until she is put up against Logan who teaches her a few things. When Logan was introduced, I was worried this was going to become one of those stereotypical new adult novel insta-love but the fact that Alyssa had no interest in Logan beyond working with him, that completely derailed all of that. There was romance and I enjoyed that Alyssa toyed with the idea of either giving her ex another try or go for this sensual lady, Seraphina. She ended up picking Seraphina and the romance was quite evident without it taking over the whole story. I appreciate when authors do not turn their female leads into gooey pots of melted marshmallows when there is love involved. It's just too bad that Seraphina duped Alyssa. This is a fun story full of twists, turns, elves and fantastical assassins. I definitely recommend this to any urban fantasy readers. About the Author

Melbourne, 2052, two years since The Fall.
A wave of infection, the Jackson Virus, has swept the world, leaving in its wake a terrifying apocalyptic wasteland populated by wild cleanskin survivor groups and the ravenous, infected night predators – the jacks. In this nightmare landscape, one of the last remaining sanctuaries is Kulin Wallcom, a community enclosed by a 10-metre wall patrolled by what’s left of the military. The wallcoms are the last remaining bastions of defence and security in a world gone over the edge. But the people of Kulin can’t stay behind their wall forever. Recovery expert, John Bradley, is part of a major operation into the wasteland looking to not only ensure the survival of Kulin by bringing back critical supplies from the abandoned Southstone Supermall, but, more crucially, to also locate and extract the only person left who may be able to reverse the tide of infection. However, the mission faces danger at every turn. It seems to be compromised from the inside, Southstone is thought to be an impossible target overrun with infected, and wasteland survivor bands, led by the psychopathic wasteland leader, the Headhunter, are bent on making sure the operation has to fight each step of the way to get back to the wallcom before nightfall. Because that’s when the jacks come out. And they will find you. Welcome to the world of The Fall. My Rating
Review
There is something about zombie novels that is such a simple, easy read for me. Even though authors spend all this time creating complex worlds where the dead come to life, I just get right into them. It's almost like a palate cleanser for me.
However Conversion is different. What a world to live in. Hot, dry, desolate and zombies. Damn. What a scary mix, honestly. A flu wiped up the planet and there were only a few left, struggling to eke out an existence and survive. Some were inside walls and some lived outside, doing whatever they could to survive or find their place on the food chain. It was a very "Mad Max: Thunder Dome" feel mixed with "I am Legend". All the different views and characters were complex but what I really enjoyed was that the jacks and jills had their own complex characteristics. The author explained the jacks and jills own insight and how they lived. They reminded me, actually, of the creatures in I am Legend. The pale, favouring dark places and stayed in packs with an alpha to lead them. They hunted at night. Each alpha had their own personality as well, and they seemed to recall their past as well. It was really fascinating. I enjoyed the wallcom situations and the strategy of the teams, and the bad guy was clearly absolutely certifiably insane. Near the end, I was actually wondering if the people who this person talked to were real or if they were part of the person's psyche fragmenting from all the horrors of the world. I definitely recommend this book for all the horror fanatics out there! Where to Buy

I received this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of those books that is tough to put down and walk away from. It lingers, if you do manage to put it down, and it stalks your waking (sometimes sleeping) moments. It makes you wonder what is next!
Can you imagine, though, waking up beside your partner in a pool of your partner's blood with a blinding headache and you're not even sure how any of this happened. Did they kill themselves? Did you do it? Did someone else? You can't even remember the gun shot either. Then add in the fact that your father is the infamous I-75 Strangler. I'd be freaking right out. You know, I have always wondered what happens to the family of a serial killer. Especially the children. How are they affected and how do they handle the truth about their parental figures? This gave me a little look into how one might handle it. One thing that amazed me, though, is how quick the police were to pin this on Libby without doing any kind of work. And the fact that Libby had to take it into her own hands to do the work. I definitely recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good domestic suspense novel that keeps you utterly guessing if it was Libby or if it was someone else who killed the husband!
